Exterminating Angel Press
Creative solutions for practical idealists.
Exterminating Angel Press aims to publish books, regardless of the subject, that challenge the dominant cultural story. Anything and everything that asks why we see things—and therefore act—the way we do, and that suggests ways in which we might see them differently—and therefore change the way we act—are subjects for Exterminating Angel Press. We’re on the side of a culture of partnership and equity, rather than an imperial one of domination and hierarchy, and we aim to do our bit to help that kind of a culture grow.
Our first season includes everything from a cookbook, to a history of superheroines, to an analysis of how the story of Christianity was shrunk to fit. Exterminating Angel Press grew naturally out of our online monthly magazine, www.exterminatingangel.com, and like the community there, we’re focused on our core values of partnership and equity. Exterminating Angel Press concentrates on points of view not common in the marketplace, with our ideal reader being the intelligent fifteen-year-old in all of us—the one who wants to fi nd out about the world and all its possibilities.
We’re named after the classic movie by Luis Buñuel, The Exterminating Angel, where a dinner party of well-fed bourgeois finds that, for no apparent reason, they can’t leave the house. At the end of the night, just as mysteriously as they were trapped before, they’re suddenly free to go. They go out the door, to great rejoicing from the surrounding town, whose inhabitants pour into a church to give thanksgiving. And then—no one can leave the church.
So another of our mottoes is: “Just walk out the door.”
