Profile Books was founded in 1996 to publish stimulating nonfiction, publishing across a wide range of subjects including history, biography, memoir, politics, current affairs, business, travel, humor, popular science, and a little bit of fiction.
We are part of the Independent Alliance, a global alliance of ten UK publishers and their international partners who share a common vision of editorial excellence, original, diverse publishing, and innovation in marketing and commercial success.
In 2003, we published our first million-copy seller, Eats, Shoots & Leaves by Lynne Truss, and were named the Small Publisher of the Year at the 2004 British Book Awards. We have since had Christmas bestsellers with New Scientist titles Does Anything Eat Wasps? and Why Don’t Penguins’ Feet Freeze?.
We pride ourselves on our strong business and management list and have continued international success with key authors such as Max Landsberg, Patrick Dixon, and Duncan Clarke.
In 2007, Profile acquired Serpent’s Tail, bringing together two of the most distinctive, highly regarded, and fiercely independent small publishers in London. We then set up GreenProfile in November 2007, a green and ethical imprint headed by Rough Guides founder Mark Ellingham.
Profile is still growing, but we are still small and confident that we can publish more effectively and more nimbly than some of the bigger companies. We set out to publish fast, paying careful attention to what is special about each book.
