Gentle Path Press was founded in 1998 by Patrick Carnes, PhD, a pioneering researcher, clinician, and author in the field of sexual and multiple addictions. Dr. Carnes’ goal was to publish cutting-edge books and other resources for consumers and professionals on topics related to addiction, trauma, and brain chemistry. Dr. Carnes’ innovative research and writing became widely known in 1983 with the publication of his book Out of the Shadows: Understanding Sexual Addiction. It was the first book designed to help addicts deal with their sexual compulsions and to examine the tangled web of trauma, love, addictive sex, hate, and fear often found in family relationships. His research, work with patients, and writing have continued over the past three decades. Experts and consumers alike have come to embrace Dr. Carnes’ 2001 book, Facing the Shadow: Starting Sexual and Relationship Recovery, as his most compelling and important work to date. Facing the Shadow has been an underground best-seller with more than seventy-five thousand copies in print, despite limited availability to trade audiences. Facing the Shadow introduced readers to Dr. Carnes’ revolutionary thirty task model for beginning and sustaining long-term recovery. While sex addiction is not new, the media attention it has been receiving is. The need for reliable information is greater than ever before. Gentle Path Press books provide readers with the best research-based materials to help repair the lives of individuals and families.
