It was founded in 1996 by a group of writers, musicians, and educators who wanted to create a space for Indian culture in mainstream children’s literature. The organization was a pioneer in the children’s audiobooks market in India where it remains the market leader. Karadi Tales produces high-quality picture books that feature a variety of illustration styles with the objective of enhancing children’s visual literacy and their exposure to various art forms. The books cover subjects such as environment conservation, bullying prevention, kindness, animal welfare, gender, and adoption without sounding preachy. Karadi Tales picture books have sold translation rights all over the world, with editions in Thai, Chinese, Bahasa, German, French, Japanese, Portuguese, Italian, Nepali, and Spanish. Over the past 24 years, Karadi Tales has racked up several national and international accolades such as The Hindu Young World Goodbooks Awards, the Dr Toy Award, the NAPPA Award, the Jarul Children’s Choice Award, the Comic Con India Award, and the South Asian Book Award. It has also been featured in lists such as White Ravens, International Board on Books for Young People, the New York Public Library’s Best Children’s Books, the Dolly Parton Imagination Library Program, and more. In 2017, Karadi Tales was shortlisted for the Best Publisher Award (Asia) at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair. In 2020, Karadi Tales won Audiobook Publisher of the Year at the International Excellence Awards by the London Book Fair.
